Three hundred years ago Elizabeth Armstrong was hanged as a witch in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Today, her home still stands as a testament to evil. Their restoration of the neglected landmark leads to the discovery of a root cellar, boarded up for centuries and blanketed in a peculiar, silvery mold. When the fungus accidentally gets into a fresh wound on Edward's hand, the pain disappears. Intrigued, he runs a series of tests. In a bold move, he ingests it. In twenty-four hours his memory becomes sharper, his concentration more pronounced, and every pleasure more intense. Convinced of its promise as a cure for degenerative brain disease, Edward plans to market "Ultra" as the most lucrative drug since Prozac. It would also make Edward the most famous, and richest, man in the world. At the same time, Kim, a student of natural medicine, makes a discovery of her own. It dates back to 1702.
